A Community That Actively Supports Learning

With six public school districts and other private and parochial schools in Union County, parents can find a curriculum that suits practically any child’s educational and career needs.

The El Dorado School District is unique in a number of ways. It receives unparalled support from the El Dorado Education Foundation (EDEF), a non-profit organization that recognizes excellence with financial incentives for teachers. In the past five years, the Foundation has awarded over $250,000 to educators who propose innovative projects to enhance learning.  It also works with the South Arkansas Community College to promote seminars for students and parents on “How to Prepare and Pay for College.”

Children in Classroom Perhaps the most noteworthy contribution of the El Dorado Education Foundation has been to assist in the establishment of the nation’s first elementary and secondary school endowed chair program which enables the district to recruit outstanding talent to fill chair positions in mathematics, science and foreign language. EDEF also manages a program that recognizes excellent performance with annual monetary awards to teachers.

But the Foundation is not the only organization active in recognizing and rewarding educational achievement in the El Dorado School District. Murphy Oil Corporation annually makes significant cash awards to outstanding students in the district through its Murphy Education Program:

  • First graders are awarded $1000 by scoring in the 85th percentile or above in the Stanford Diagnostic test.
  • 20 fourth graders with high scores on the Arkansas Comprehensive Testing, Assessment & Accountability Program (AACTAP) test will win $100.
  • 20 sixth graders with high scores on the AACTAP test will win $150.
  • 20 eighth graders with high scores on the AACTAP test will win $200.
  • Students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses who score high on AP tests can win $250 to $500 per test. Murphy will pay test fees for all AP students.
  • Students achieving an ACT score of 23-27 are awarded $100. Those scoring 28-36 win $250.
  • Students achieving an SAT score of 1200 to 1399 are awarded $500. Students scoring over 1400 receive $1000.
  • Any El Dorado student who achieves National Merit semi-finalist status wins a one-time cash grant of $500, and finalists receive $1000.

Preparing Students for the Real World

South Arkansas Community College offers the kinds of courses that make students and graduates job-ready. With two conveniently located campuses in El Dorado, SouthArk proves that college doesn’t have to be far away and expensive to be worthwhile. One of the best educational options in Arkansas, SouthArk saves the student much of the high cost of a college education by offering a broad selection of occupational programs to equip them with one or two years of training for a career in business or industry in a competitive workplace.

South Ark Community College

SouthArk offers both transfer and occupational curricula at below average costs for public high education. This enables students to continue working or find employment while pursuing advanced training locally. And general education coursework is readily transferable, so students can easily pursue baccalaureate studies at neighboring four-year institutions.

Online courses are offered in many disciplines with the number increasing every semester.  In addition, technical courses leading to certifications are available:  Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA), A+ Certification, Network+, Leviton Cabling, Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS).  Specific credits earned at SouthArk will transfew into a bachelor's degree plan at most other accredited colleges and universities nationwide.
